Why do bras lose shape?

Bras lose their shape due to several preventable factors that put stress on the bra's materials and construction.

Heat from dryers, hot water, and direct sunlight accelerates the breakdown of elastane fibers in bands and straps, while harsh chemicals like chlorine bleach and fabric softeners attack the polymer chains that give these materials their stretch and recovery properties.

Mechanical stress from over-agitation during washing, improper storage that crushes molded cups, or wearing an incorrect size that overstresses the band and straps all contribute to premature shape loss.

Additionally, moisture and body oils accelerate a process called hydrolysis in the elastic fibers, permanently reducing their ability to snap back into position, which is why sports bras worn for high-sweat activities need more frequent gentle washing and replacement.

The good news is that most shape loss can be prevented through proper care. Hand washing or using a delicate cycle with cold water, air-drying flat, and rotating your bras to allow the elastic fibers time to recover between wears can dramatically extend the life of your investment pieces.
