Why do bras gape at the top?

Bras gape at the top due to a mismatch between the bra's design and your individual shape, not because your body needs correcting. The most common cause is when cups lack adequate depth where your breast needs it most, your tissue pushes the cup away from your chest, causing the band to hold the bottom in place while the top edge flares outward, creating that telltale gap.

This gaping often occurs with molded T-shirt bras that maintain their rigid shape rather than conforming to your natural contours, especially if you have projected breasts or center-full shapes that need more room than these shallow-style cups provide.

Additionally, a loose or improperly fitted band allows the entire bra to tip forward, while overly tight straps pull the cup edges outward, compounding the gaping problem. Cup height also plays a role - if the neckline is cut too high for your breast root or if you have softer tissue that doesn't fill the upper portion, the edge will float even when the overall volume is correct, which is why seamed cups with stretch lace or elasticated necklines often solve this issue better than rigid foam edges.
