Why do bras feel scratchy after washing?

Bras can feel scratchy after washing due to residue buildup from detergents and fabric softeners, or from broken elastic fibers and rough seams that become more pronounced after laundering.

Harsh or excessive detergent can leave behind chemicals that dry out fabrics, making them stiff and uncomfortable against skin. Fabric softeners, although designed to smooth materials, actually coat technical fabrics, causing reduced breathability and trapping friction-creating particles in the weave. Heat from the dryer can further exacerbate scratchiness by hardening elastic threads and leaving foam cups distorted or rough.

The best way to maintain comfort is to wash bras in cold water with a gentle, fragrance-free detergent, skip softeners, thoroughly rinse, and always air dry.
