Cup size, the letter in your bra measurement, represents the difference between your bust and band measurements. For an A cup, that means your bust is about 1 inch larger than your band or underbust measurement.
Band size refers to the number portion of your bra size, like the “32” in a 32A, and represents the measurement around your ribcage, just under your bust. The band provides most of the support in a bra, not the straps, so finding the right band size is key to feeling comfortable and secure.
Key bra features for 36A bra size
For a 36A bra size, you have a wide variety of bra styles to choose from. If your goal is to enhance your shape and cleavage, consider bras with sturdy foam cups and padding.
Demi and balconette cups will be a better choice than full-cup bras. Alternatively, a 36A bra size can get away with bras that utilize much lower support.
Bralettes, soft triangle bras, and bandeau bras are excellent options for maximum comfort. With smaller bands, straps can sometimes slip off because of wider-set cup designs.
Look for bras with narrower-set straps or convertible options that can crisscross or adjust inward.
How should an A cup bra fit?
For someone with an A cup, the ideal bra fit focuses on comfort, shaping, and gentle lift. There should be no gaping or flattening the bust.
The band should provide most of the support. It should feel snug but not tight (you should be able to fit two fingers under it).
The cups should lie flat against your chest without any gaping or wrinkling. The center gore (middle part of the bra) should rest flat against your sternum.
For A cups, look for narrow-set straps or closer-set cups to ensure a better fit and avoid slipping straps.
