Why do bras have padding?

Bras have padding for modesty, shaping, lift, and volume.

There are many types of bras that fall into the "padded bra" category. This includes:

  • Lightly padded bras, which have lightly lined molded foam cups.
  • Lifting bras, which have a small amount of padding at the base of the cup designed to gently lift the breasts.
  • Push-up bras, which feature substantial angled pads that push breasts up and together.

Lightly padded bras are typically used for nipple modesty and overall breast shaping, but they won't fill in volume gaps or increase your cleavage. The pads in lifting and push-up bras displace breast tissue from the bra cup, which leads to a more fuller and lifted effect.
