When Were Bras Invented?

Though bras are a wardrobe staple of today, they haven't actually been around for very long. So, when were bras invented?

While the bra as we know it today is a relatively recent invention, its history spans centuries of fashion, function, and cultural norms. The idea of breast support goes as far back as ancient times, and evidence of bra-like garments can be found throughout history. These early garments were primarily meant to support the breasts during physical activities and shape the silhouette according to the fashion of the time.

Split Corset Bra

The first “official” bra dates back to 1869.  French designer Herminie Cadolle splits the corset into two parts: a lower piece for the waist and an upper piece with shoulder straps to support the breasts. She presents her "bien-être" (well-being) at the Paris World's Fair.

It was called a split corset bra, and the top part became the first iteration of the modern day bra. 

Bullet Bra

The next notable bra is the Bullet bra. Bullet bras were first introduced in the 1940s, and they were designed to protect women working in factories during World War II.

The conical shape was intended to provide maximum protection. This bra style became popular in the 1950s, and then of course iconic ladies like Marilyn Monroe and Madonna helped give the bra its iconic status.

Criss-Cross Bra

This criss-cross soft cup bra is a very iconic style designed to maximize separation, and it was invented in the 50s. These bras are designed to maximize separation between the breasts thanks to an elastic X design that crosses through the front of the garment.

When people think of vintage bra styles, this is often the style that comes to mind, although versions are definitely still available today. 

The Wonderbra

New materials like nylon and spandex increased comfort and affordability. The Wonderbra, invented in 1964, used over 50 pattern pieces to provide uplift and cleavage and quickly became the new standard for breast support.
